THE GIFT OF MUSIC
“Next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world. It controls our thoughts, minds, hearts, and spirits. Our dear fathers and prophets did not desire without reason that music be always used in the churches. Hence, we have so many songs and psalms. This precious gift has been given to man alone that he might thereby remind himself that God has created man for the express purpose of praising and extolling God. However, when man’s natural musical ability is whetted and polished to the extent that it becomes an art, then do we note with great surprise the great and perfect wisdom of God in music, which is, after all, His product and His gift; we marvel when we hear music in which one voice sings a simple melody, while three, four, or five other voices play and trip lustily around the voice that sings its simple melody and adorn this simple melody wonderfully with
artistic musical effects, thus reminding us of a heavenly dance, where all meet in a spirit of
friendliness, caress and embrace.” –Martin Luther, 1538
THE AMERICAN SOLDIER
"The Soldier is the Army. No army is better than its Soldiers. The Soldier is also a citizen. In fact, the highest obligation and privilege of citizenship is that of bearing arms for one's country. Hence it is a proud privilege to be a Soldier-- a good Soldier. Anyone, in any walk of life, who is content with mediocrity is untrue to himself and to American tradition. To be a good Soldier a man must have discipline, self-respect, pride in his unit and in his country, a high sense of duty and obligation to his comrades and to his superiors, and self-confidence born of demonstrated ability. There has been, and is now, a great deal of talk about discipline; but few people, in or out of the Army, know what it is or why it is necessary." –GEN George S. Patton, Jr., War as I Knew It, 1947

Prayer of George Washington for
The United States of America
Almighty God, We make our earnest prayer - that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy holy protection, - that thou wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government; - and entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow citizens of the United States of America at large. And finally that Thou wilt most graciously be pleased to dispose us all - to do justice, - to love mercy and - to demean ourselves with that charity, humility and pacific temper of mind which were the characteristics of The Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without whose example in these things we can never hope to be a happy nation. Grant our supplication, we beseech thee, through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.
~ George Washington, April 30th, 1789
“Oh, eternal and everlasting God, direct my thoughts, words and work. Wash away my sins in the immaculate blood of the Lamb and purge my heart by thy Holy Spirit. Daily, frame me more and more in the likeness of thy son, Jesus Christ, that living in thy fear, and dying in thy favor, I may in thy appointed time obtain the resurrection of the justified unto eternal life. Bless, O Lord, the whole race of mankind and let the world be filled with the knowledge of thee and thy son, Jesus Christ.”
~ General George Washington

A Soldier's Prayer
Almighty Father, whose command is over all and whose love never fails,
make me aware of Thy presence and obedient to Thy will.
Keep me true to my best self, guarding me against dishonesty in
purpose and in deed, and helping me so to Soldier and to live so as to stand
unashamed and unafraid before my fellow Soldiers, my loved ones, and Thee.
Protect those in whose love I live. Give me the will to do the work of a Soldier and to
accept my share of responsibilities with a strong heart and a cheerful mind.
Make me conscience of those entrusted to my leadershipand faithful to the duties
my country and the Army has entrusted to me. Let my uniform remind me daily of the
traditions of the Service of which I am a part.
If I am inclined to doubt, steady my faith; if I am tempted,
make me strong to resist; if I should miss the mark,
bestow upon me courage to try again.
Guide me with the light of Thy truth and keep before me the life of
Him in Whose example and deliverance I trust.
In the name of my Lord and Master Jesus Christ, forever and ever.
Amen
